What does insurance renewal actually mean?
Renewal is paying your premium before the current policy period ends, so your cover continues without a break. That word - continuous - is the whole point. An unbroken policy is what protects the benefits you’ve quietly built up: the waiting periods you’ve already served, the No-Claim Bonus you’ve accrued, and, in health insurance, the moratorium clock that eventually makes your claims harder to dispute. Let a policy lapse and much of that can reset to zero.
Renewal is not the same as porting. Renewing keeps you with the same insurer and plan. Porting moves you to a different insurer while carrying your accrued credit across. Both are renewal-time decisions - we cover both below.
Why it matters more than it looks
Three things a clean renewal quietly protects
Most people renew on autopilot. These are the benefits that are silently on the line each year.
Waiting periods you’ve served
Every claim-free year chips away at your pre-existing-disease and specific-illness waiting periods. Renew continuously and that credit carries forward. A lapse can send the clock back to the start.
Your No-Claim Bonus
Claim-free years grow your cover through a cumulative bonus - extra sum insured at no extra premium. Renew within the grace period and it stays intact; a lapse usually wipes it out.
Your moratorium clock (health)
Under IRDAI’s 2024 rules, after 5 continuous years an insurer can no longer contest a health claim for non-disclosure, except for proven fraud. Continuity is what gets you to that milestone.
How MITRA helps at renewal
A renewal review, not a renewal reminder
Anyone can send you a payment link. We do the thinking most buyers skip - and then stay with you for the claim.
Free policy review
Send us your current policy. We read the fine print - sub-limits, room caps, co-pays - and tell you in plain English what you’re actually covered for today.
Gaps & adequacy check
Is your sum insured still enough for today’s hospital costs? Any cover you’ve outgrown or now need? We flag it - without pushing an upsell.
Right-fit options
If renewing as-is is best, we’ll say so. If a better-fit plan across our 30+ insurers makes sense - including porting without losing your waiting-period credit - we lay out the trade-offs.
Claims support, for life
Renew or port through MITRA and your dedicated claim expert continues - the same person who handles your paperwork, the hospital and the insurer whenever you claim. Included free, every year.
The renewal decision
Renew, enhance, or move? A simple way to decide
There are really four choices at renewal. Here’s when each one tends to make sense - no jargon, no pressure.
Renew as-is
Your plan still fits your life and settles claims well, and the premium is fair. If nothing has changed, the simplest move is often the right one.
Renew and enhance
The base plan is good but your cover feels thin. A top-up or super top-up can raise your protection affordably - without disturbing what you’ve already built.
Port to a new insurer
You want better terms, service or hospital network. Porting lets you switch insurer while carrying your accrued waiting-period credit - if you apply at least 45 days before renewal.
Not sure which bucket you’re in? That’s exactly the conversation a good advisor is for. We’ll walk through your situation and recommend the one that fits - even when the answer is “just renew, you’re fine.”

| Aspect | Health | Life (term) | Home & Cyber |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical grace period | 15 days (monthly mode) or 30 days (other modes), per IRDAI 2024 | 15 days (monthly) or 30 days (other modes) | As per the policy - often short or none; cover ends at expiry |
| What continuous renewal protects | Waiting periods, No-Claim Bonus, moratorium clock (5 yrs) | Your original age-based premium and cover - no fresh medicals | Uninterrupted protection for your home, belongings and digital life |
| What a lapse can cost you | Waiting periods and moratorium reset; NCB lost; possible fresh underwriting | Cover stops; revival needs arrears plus interest and may need medicals | Any loss during the uncovered gap is on you |
| If it lapses, getting cover back | Usually re-applying as fresh - continuity generally lost | Revive within the revival window (commonly up to 5 yrs, non-linked) | Buy a fresh policy - no continuity to restore |
| Where MITRA fits | We review fit, protect your credits, and handle every claim | We track your date and revive lapsed cover before it’s too late | We keep you covered with no gap, and support any claim |

Missed the date? Here’s what really happens
A missed premium doesn’t destroy your cover overnight - but the window to fix it is real. Two paths, depending on where you are.
Within the grace period
- Your policy is still treated as continuous
- Renew now and your credits stay protected - waiting periods, NCB, moratorium
- For installment health plans, cover generally continues through the grace window
- Simplest fix: just pay before the grace period ends
After it lapses
- Health: continuity usually resets - you may re-apply as a fresh policyholder
- Life: risk cover stops; revival needs arrears plus interest, and sometimes medicals
- Revival gets harder - and costlier - the longer you wait
- Talk to us anyway; we’ll find the least-damaging route back to cover
Already lapsed on a policy bought elsewhere? Reach out regardless. We’ll tell you honestly whether reviving it or moving to a better-fit plan is the smarter step - and either way, you gain our claims support from then on.
Renew vs. port
Should you stay, or switch and carry your credit across?
Porting is a right, not a gamble - but timing and acceptance matter. A neutral look at both.

| Aspect | Renewing with your current insurer | Porting to a new insurer |
|---|---|---|
| What stays the same | The insurer, plan and terms you already know | Your accrued waiting-period credit carries over |
| When it’s the better move | Your plan still fits and pays claims well | You want better terms, service or network - without losing your credit |
| Timing | On or before your renewal date (within grace) | Apply at least 45 days before your renewal date |
| What to watch | Quiet premium hikes and unchanged sub-limits | Fresh underwriting on the new plan - acceptance isn’t guaranteed |
| MITRA’s role | We check whether renewing is genuinely right for you | We manage the paperwork and deadlines - and your claim expert continues |

Your 6-point renewal checklist
Ten minutes now saves a nasty surprise at claim time. Run through these before you pay - or ask us to do it with you.
Check your cover
- Is your sum insured still enough for today’s hospital costs?
- Have your circumstances changed - new family member, new home, new city?
- Any No-Claim Bonus you should be carrying forward?
Check the details
- Are your nominee, address and contact details up to date?
- Do your preferred hospitals still fall in the network?
- Set a reminder 30–45 days ahead so you never rely on grace
Clearing up the confusion
Common renewal misconceptions
“Renewing is just paying again.”
The payment is the easy part. What you’re really protecting is continuity - the waiting periods, bonus and moratorium credit that make future claims smoother.
“A day late and I’ve lost everything.”
Not immediately. A grace period protects you for a short window. But once it ends, the consequences are real - so the window isn’t something to lean on.
“Switching insurers means starting over.”
Not if you port. Portability is designed to carry your accrued waiting-period credit to the new insurer - provided you apply in time.
Renewal words, in plain English
The terms you’ll meet at renewal
- Grace period - A short window after your due date to pay without breaking continuity. Commonly 15 days (monthly mode) or 30 days (other modes) under IRDAI norms.
- Lapse - What happens when the grace period ends unpaid - cover and accrued benefits can stop or reset.
- Revival - Restoring a lapsed policy by paying arrears (often with interest) and meeting the insurer’s conditions, within a set revival window.
- No-Claim Bonus - Extra cover you earn for claim-free years - often as a growing cumulative bonus at no extra premium.
- Moratorium period - In health, the 5-year mark after which an insurer can’t contest a claim for non-disclosure, barring proven fraud (IRDAI 2024).
- Portability - Moving to a new insurer at renewal while carrying your accrued waiting-period credit across.
Questions, answered
Insurance renewal FAQs
What does insurance renewal mean?
Renewal is paying your premium before the current policy period ends so your cover continues without a break. Keeping it continuous is what protects the benefits you’ve built up - waiting periods already served, your No-Claim Bonus, and, in health insurance, your moratorium period.
What happens if I miss my renewal date?
Most policies give a grace period after the due date. Under IRDAI’s 2024 health rules, that’s 15 days for monthly-installment plans and 30 days for quarterly, half-yearly or annual ones; renew within it and your accrued credits stay intact. Miss the grace period and the policy lapses - health continuity can reset and life cover stops until it’s revived.
Will I lose my No-Claim Bonus if I renew late?
If you renew within the grace period, your No-Claim Bonus - along with your sum insured, waiting-period credit and moratorium period - is protected under IRDAI norms. If the policy fully lapses, the accrued bonus is typically forfeited.
Should I renew my existing plan or port to a new insurer?
Renew if your current plan still fits and settles claims well. Consider porting if you want better terms, service or a wider hospital network - you can carry your accrued waiting-period credit to a new insurer if you apply at least 45 days before your renewal date. We’ll tell you honestly which route is right for you.
Can I revive a life insurance policy that has already lapsed?
Often yes. Non-linked policies, including most term plans, can usually be revived within a revival window - commonly up to five years from the first unpaid premium - by paying arrears with interest and meeting the insurer’s health requirements. It gets harder the longer you wait, so acting early matters.
Does my premium or sum insured change at renewal?
It can. Insurers may revise premiums, often with age or claims history, and your own cover needs may have changed since last year. Renewal is the right moment to check your sum insured is still adequate for today’s medical costs - a review most buyers skip. We do it with you, free.
Do I get claims support if I renew through MITRA?
Yes. Claims assistance is included for the life of the policy, across every renewal, and the same dedicated claim expert stays with you. If you move an existing policy to MITRA at renewal, our claims support comes with it from then on. See the Claims Support page for how it works.
Does MITRA charge for renewal help?
No. Renewal reviews and claims support are free for you. Like any IRDAI-registered intermediary, we earn a standard commission from the insurer when a policy is issued or renewed - and our advisors are measured on fit and claim outcomes, not sales.
How far ahead should I start my renewal?
Aim for 30–45 days before your renewal date. That leaves time to review your cover, compare options if needed, and - if porting makes sense - meet the 45-day porting deadline without rushing.
