What health insurance renewal actually protects
Renewal is paying your premium before the policy year ends, so your cover continues without a break. In health insurance, that unbroken record is worth far more than the payment itself - it’s what carries your waiting-period credit, your accrued bonus and your moratorium clock forward into next year. Let the policy lapse and much of that resets to zero, as if you were a brand-new customer.
Good news under IRDAI norms: health insurance is lifelong renewable. An insurer can’t refuse your renewal because you’ve aged or claimed - only in cases of established fraud, non-disclosure or misrepresentation.
Why continuity matters
Three things a clean health renewal keeps intact
Waiting periods served
Pre-existing-disease and specific-illness waiting periods count down only while your cover stays continuous. Renew on time and that credit carries forward; a lapse can send the clock back to the start.
Your No-Claim Bonus
Claim-free years grow your sum insured through a cumulative bonus, at no extra premium. Renew within the grace period and it’s protected under IRDAI rules; a full lapse usually wipes it out.
Your moratorium clock
After 5 continuous years, an insurer can no longer contest your claim for non-disclosure, barring proven fraud (IRDAI 2024). Only unbroken renewals get you to that milestone.
If you’re cutting it close
The grace period - your short safety net
Miss the due date and you’re not immediately uncovered. IRDAI’s 2024 rules give you a grace window to pay while your accrued credits stay protected.
Within the grace period
- 15 days if you pay in monthly installments
- 30 days for quarterly, half-yearly or annual payments
- All credits protected - waiting periods, No-Claim Bonus, moratorium
- For installment plans, cover generally continues through the grace window
After it lapses
- Continuity usually resets - you may re-apply as a fresh policyholder
- Waiting periods can start over from day one
- Your accrued No-Claim Bonus is typically forfeited
- Fresh underwriting may apply - talk to us before it comes to this
The review most people skip
Is your sum insured still enough?
Hospital costs climb every year. The cover that felt generous when you bought it can quietly fall behind - and renewal is the natural moment to check. You usually have two ways to top it up without starting over:
Raise your base cover
- Simple: one policy, one renewal date
- Best when your current sum insured is modest
- Premium rises with the higher cover
Add a super top-up
- Adds a large second layer above a deductible, affordably
- Best when you already hold a decent base plan
- We’ll show you the exact math for both

Renew vs. port
Staying, or switching insurers at renewal
You’re not locked in. Portability lets you move to a new insurer while carrying your accrued waiting-period credit - if you plan it in time. A neutral look:

| Aspect | Renewing your current plan | Porting to a new insurer |
|---|---|---|
| What stays the same | The insurer, plan and terms you know | Your accrued waiting-period credit carries over |
| Best when | Your plan still fits and settles claims well | You want a better network, terms or service |
| Timing | On or before your renewal date (within grace) | Apply at least 45 days before your renewal date |
| To watch | Quiet premium hikes, unchanged sub-limits | Fresh underwriting - acceptance isn’t guaranteed |
| MITRA’s role | We check whether renewing is genuinely right for you | We manage the paperwork and 45-day timeline |

Health insurance renewal FAQs
What does health insurance renewal mean?
Renewal is paying your premium before the policy year ends so your cover continues unbroken. That continuity is what preserves the benefits you’ve built up - waiting periods already served, your No-Claim Bonus, and your moratorium period.
What is the grace period for health insurance renewal?
Under IRDAI’s 2024 rules, it’s 15 days for monthly-installment plans and 30 days for quarterly, half-yearly or annual ones. Renew within it and your accrued credits are protected; for installment plans, cover generally continues through the grace window.
Will I lose my waiting-period credit or No-Claim Bonus if my policy lapses?
If it fully lapses past the grace period, continuity usually resets - waiting periods can start over, the moratorium clock restarts, and the accrued bonus is typically forfeited. Renewing on time protects all of it.
Should I increase my sum insured at renewal?
It’s worth reviewing. Medical costs rise every year, so last year’s cover may be thin today. A top-up or super top-up can raise your protection affordably without disturbing your base plan - we’ll do the math with you, free.
Can I switch insurers at renewal without losing my waiting periods?
Yes - that’s portability. Apply to the new insurer at least 45 days before your renewal date and your accrued waiting-period credit carries over. Acceptance is subject to the new insurer’s underwriting.
Does my claims support continue after renewal?
Yes. With MITRA, your dedicated claim expert stays with you across every renewal, for the life of the policy - at no charge, ever. See the health claim process for how it works.
Does MITRA charge for a health renewal review?
No. Reviews and claims support are free for you. Like any IRDAI-registered intermediary, we earn a standard commission from the insurer at issuance or renewal - and advisors are measured on fit, not sales.
